Railway Expansion for Femern Connection
– Aarsleff Rail, Denmark

Henning Grønbæk from Aarsleff Rail explains how our solutions, TrackBed360, is used in his Masnedsund construction project.

Introduction

In Lolland, Denmark, the railway is getting prepared for heavy traffic caused by the construction of the Femern connection. This will connect Rødby in Denmark to Puttgarden in Germany.

Challenge

As part of this project, Aarsleff Rail is assigned the task to expand the railway from one to two tracks in Masnedsund. This is a critical task since the original track will be active throughout the process. The task involves widening the current embankment and placing a new track bed beside the current. This exposes the current track to heavy vibrations and a risk of slippage in the embankment. It is therefore very important that Aarsleff has a constant overview of the track, to make sure that the track is safe for the passing of rolling stock.

Solution

Traditional monitoring methods were unsuitable for this case, so Railmonitor was chosen to provide a solution. Our TrackBed360 solution was selected, with its core strength being our advanced software platform, the Digital Service Platform. Wireless and highly reliable tilt sensors were installed on the sleepers of the track. The sampling frequency was increased, enabling the sensors to send out measurements every minute. With train traffic occurring every 15 minutes, relevant stakeholders receive timely notifications, allowing them to take action before the next train passes by.

TrackBed360 ensures that Aarsleff Rail has a continuous and accurate overview of the track condition, enabling safe and efficient railway expansion in preparation for the Femern connection.
