Metro Line Construction – Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Austria
Published on: Aug 17, 2021
Introduction
In the fall of 2020, the Austrian infrastructure owner, Wiener Linien GmbH & Co KG, awarded a contract to Railmonitor and our consortium partners RED Bernard GmbH (part of the Bernard Group) and VSP Stolitzka & Partner ZT GmbH. Under the terms of a 5-year contract, the consortium will manage the measurement and monitoring of assets at Matzleinsdorfer Platz, a critical site in the historic construction of a new metro line in Vienna.
Challenge: Metro Construction Monitoring at Matzleinsdorfer Platz
Matzleinsdorfer Platz is a significant hub with substantial traffic, including both heavy rail and light rail. The new metro station will be large, with approximately 2-3 tracks crossing below the existing tracks. Ensuring a high level of safety is paramount due to the complexity and uncertainty of excavation activities. The use of TBM machines, which cause vibrations, necessitates adequate monitoring and safety measures throughout the rail construction process.
Early on, Schimetta Consult ZT, the consortium in charge of the monitoring aspect, evaluated and scheduled the project’s overall safety requirements, concluding that a high level of monitoring was essential.
Solution: Railmonitor’s Advanced Software Platform
Railmonitor, together with local Austrian partners RED Bernard and VSP Stolitzka & Partner ZT, provided a comprehensive monitoring solution for Matzleinsdorfer Platz. Railmonitor’s software, the Digital Service Platform, known for its unique agility, captures and processes data from various sources, offering Wiener Linien, ÖBB, and our partners unlimited access to detailed insights into the health of the monitored assets.
The software’s capacity to store and manage large amounts of data is crucial for this rail project, which demands strict monitoring. The consortium monitors the infrastructure every second throughout the project’s duration, ensuring real-time data availability and predictive insights.
The metro line project spans the next 5 years, with a total of 1500 meters of tracks, distributed over 10 tracks, being monitored. Railmonitor’s solution ensures that Wiener Linien and ÖBB can predict potential failures and maintain the safety and stability of the rail construction site.

Results and Benefits: Enhanced Safety and Predictive Maintenance
Railmonitor’s comprehensive monitoring solution has provided Wiener Linien and ÖBB with a clear, real-time understanding of the condition of the metro line construction site. The ability to predict potential issues and address them proactively has significantly enhanced safety measures. The instant alarm feature ensures that any deviations from preset thresholds are immediately communicated to all relevant personnel, allowing for swift response and mitigation of risks. This proactive approach supports the long-term stability and safety of the infrastructure. Due to the software’s capabilities, the consortium can continuously monitor the site, ensuring that the metro project progresses smoothly and safely over the next five years.
